Everybody should watch this: Digital Future: The New Underclass https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000823p One in five of us have problems with day to day digital technology. Just look at the problems that the Councils' computerised systems cause people. Consultations now seem to be routinely only online. Many people do not have internet banking. You cannot expect the whole population to be constantly up to date with the latest technology or adept in using it. Paranoia is probably also adding to the isolation of the elderly when unexpected telephone calls are all treated as "scammers" nowadays. Add to that the threatened closure of the libraries (where computers are often available and where IT classes are often held) the loss of Council IT classes and the lack of silver surfer courses and help. Age UK in Hounslow used to be one provider - I don't know if they still are. It doesn't even work all the time - the equipment or the email and internet - and not everybody can just rush out and find somewhere else to access their emails etc. Have I covered everything? :) |
