I can't wholly disagree with you TP and what you say is a strong possibility but perhaps think back to WW2 and how the UK coped regarding food shortages the majority of people grew their own 'seasonal' fruit and vegetables, ate less meat and people formed co-operatives,which could be done today and something that Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall advocates, and I believe, but maybe I'm wrong, obesity, diabetes and food allergies were rare and people were generally healthier, not to mention food didn't go to waste and it didn't come wrapped in plastic or full of additives and excessive salt and sugar. I'm not suggesting for one moment this was a Utopian existence, but that there are ways round food shortages. We've all become too reliant of getting what we want when we want and seeing Food as a commodity to be discarded simply because it's past its sell by a day or that we just don't fancy it so it gets binned ! No, we may not be able to have Strawberries or Asparagus in anything other than Summer months but is that such a depravation ? Personally, I really look forward to the first English Asparagus, Runner Beans, Strawberries, new Potatoes, Tomatoes etc and they are not hard to grow if you don't have a garden grow in pots and hanging baskets. My 90 year old Mother who's fit and healthy didn't have a Banana until the early 1950's and grew up on seasonal home grown Veg and Fruit, cheap cuts of meat made into stews and Casseroles, Summer Pudding from the soft fruits from the garden. We seem to have lost the skills and art of making something out of little, such a shame. What I'm saying is that sometimes to move forward maybe it's necessary to first take a step back and learn from the past. Rather than scaremongering how about another perspective on how to cope with food shortages should it come to that, hopefully it won't and a deal will be agreed. However, my Tin Hat is at the ready 😉 |
