"What happens to broken down vehicles if they can't move over to a hard shoulder" There are emergency refuge areas every 2km. If your vehicle can't reach the next refuge, you stop on the left as before, and Lane 1 becomes a hard shoulder again with traffic banned by the red 'X' signs. 'Smart' (formerly 'managed') motorways were started 10 years ago. They are already in operation on parts of the M1, M4, M5, M6, M25, M42, M62. |
