First Migration Watch.  Now the Daily Mail (best known for its support of the Nazis - and has got very little right since).

No - the EU does not "tell" the UK how to spend its rebate.  The UK withholds (i.e. does not pay) the rebate (discount) of £4.4  billion - it is money that does not even exist because it is never paid in the first place.

So, the £19 billion gross contribution (i.e. the £350 million a week figure (in fact £364 million) still painted on the side of the "Out" battle bus, and oft repeated by Gove, Johnson and Co is in fact £280 million - still a big number, but the £350 million figure is just untrue.

These figures have been published the ONS, who have categorically refuted the "Out" campaign's figure.

And the vast majority of the "net" amount (i.e the amount we do actually pay) is paid back into the UK one way or another.

And no - the "rebate" (or discount) cannot be "taken away at any time" - unless the UK gives its consent (the UK has a veto - which cannot be taken away).

And yes, the overall figures are extremely complicated and open to interpretation - but the overriding consensus is that the UK does very well out of deal.

Let's put it this way - I can pay a higher rent to have my shop in the centre of a market town, where all my customers are, or I can try and save some money and open up shop in a remote country lane, away from all of my customers.  Which is the wiser choice?  Should I pay something to be a member of the biggest trading club in the World?  It's just good business sense.

Unfortunately, Miss Moran's assertions, without any basis at all, are illustrative of the "Out" campaign's willingness to put forward "facts" that are nothing of the kind, or to dismiss detailed research if it does not suit their World view, makes me very concerned about the government we might end up with if we leave the UK - people who put their own personal ambition (Johnson) and prejudices (Gove) ahead of the interests of our country, without any regard for the truth.

There are some valid arguments for leaving the EU (although you may have gathered, I think we should stay IN). Every one of us has an equal vote, but it would be a terrible thing for us to collectively make such an important decision based on such blatant misrepresentations of the truth.

As well as the economic and social damage we would face as a country if we left, I am very fearful that the politicians who have run a campaign (described by Professor Dougan, professor of law at Liverpool University as "dishonesty on an industrial scale" - Google it) will be in the ascendancy if we "Brexit" - and the unpleasant political regime we may end up living under.
