"EU handouts on a massive scale" - not a total lie but breathtaking hyperbole. The BBC has received slightly more than £2 million from the EU Framework programme over the past three years - a drop in the ocean compared with its annual budget of about £5 billion. The "handouts" are designed to fund scientific research (e.g. 3D broadcasting). It's unlikely they'd influence the BBC's news and current affairs coverage of the referendum debate. After all, being dependent on the financial settlement from the British government doesn't seem to prevent the BBC from being seen as a bunch of lefties by those on the right wing of the Conservative party, so why should a modest grant from the EU affect its coverage? |
