I was living in New York at the time. I’d worked late the night before, so was going in late on 9/11 but instead watched the day unfold on TV (from memory, they broke into an interview with Sarah Ferguson to report the first plane). We were spared some of the more gruesome things - I was told from England that people were falling from the towers, for example. --- The thing that stays with me most, however, was the initial reports of car bombs at the Pentagon and State, plus a bomb at the National Mall. Flicking between channels, I heard this reported more than once. The reason the alleged bombings stay with me is because we watched an interview that morning with Porter Goss (I don’t know whether it was live or pre-recorded). Mr Goss was then Chair of the House Intelligence Committee. The interview was outside the Capitol (I think). There was a loud sound in the distance, causing people to turn around towards the apparent direction of the apparent explosion. Seconds later, there was the crescendo of an approaching aircraft – causing everyone in shot to look skywards. Mr Goss cut the interview short and advised people to take cover. The sequence seemed clear - explosion, followed by approaching aircraft. |
