You can always  make an appointment to speak to a Mac Genius at the Apple Store at Westfield for free.  They will provide telephone support if you have Apple Care.

In the past I have used Carbon Copy Cloner (a free utility recommended by Apple techies) and Time Machine for my 2006 Macbook which Apple call Vintage.

I've used an external drive and USB and DVD's to store photo's and files and recently bought WD My Passport Ultra Premium Portable Hard Drive - 2 TB, Black from Amazon for £60 which works very well.   I also recommend Chiswick Computers as they provide excellent service
