Kimberly - you won't "need" do backup anything as it will transition across however making any change to an operating system I would recommend completing a backup, either in the cloud or onto a separate drive.   I would also recommend another backup a couple of days after the change in case you have a problem later on and don't want to restore to Windows 8 and update again to Windows 10.

I am not a Windows bashing person, I just like to find solutions to issues as they come up, hence my question in this case, however I also acknowledge that I had to do a rebuild of my laptop a few weeks after the Windows 10 change because there is a problem with using the "restart" option for some users.  So yes, backup before and after if poss. cause reinstalling software and devises is a pain!
