Claire, That is because the President is but one of three decision makers in the US Government. There are three houses: Executive (President); Legislative (Congress); and Judicial (Supreme Court). They are separated to create Checks and Balance. Nothing can be done without a majority between the three. If a bill passes to law (Congress) the President has the power to Veto. If he Vetos, a majority is required to over-ride his veto (from Congress). The President cannot just wake up and say 'I am going to change gun control laws, etc.'. He/She does not have that power in the Constitution. What he/she can do is propose laws, propose changes, and hope to gain enough support in Congress for it to come back to his desk for signature. Those that blame Obama for everything just don't understand the logistics behind the US Government. Thanks Obama... |
