Householders in Germany are responsible for keeping the pavement outside their houses clear of litter up to the kerb. Many, possibly most, people there clean the road gutter too and the streets of Germany look great. I think here we could do more to pick up litter ourselves but why not for leaves too? I know there are one or two people in my street who would do so and every house in Hounslow is now allowed two green bags per fortnight so quite a few of those could be filled. Perhaps the council could even give us extra green POLYBAGS that we could use. It won't remotely resolve the problem but might reduce the council's workload by say 10% as a target. Also good activity for giving pensioners exercise...might reduce NHS bill...if people are outside they might reduce heating levels in their homes thus saving on energy...community spirit...um...and all those composter bins that the councils gave out/sold years ago and are probably rarely ever used could come into use now...I'd better stop there. |
