So, do we think Sherry Malik is worth her £250,023 a year as Director of Children's and Adults' Services, nearly £39,000 more than Mary Harpley's £211,074 as Chief Executive? Are both of these sums examples of having to pay 'competitive' salaries to get the best people? (This, of course, was the reason adduced for bankers' astronomic salaries, and we all know what a great job the 'best' people made of the banking industry.) Or is it just another case of 'When there's lots of public money lying around, those in charge of it have no compunction about getting right down in the trough'? |
