Sam, why have you, inadvertently perhaps, changed Manchester to Oxford? “I went to Manchester today and had a look at the university”. University in this context is specific to Manchester, so it seems reasonable and correct to use a capital - as you say in your next sentence. In the second sentence ..."the more general noun ‘university’ is used and so it is not capitalised". The noun in this context refers specifically to Manchester (University), not to any old university. |
