I haven't done an exhaustive survey but did a cross check a couple of years ago on the exchange rates that banks were giving on overseas ATM and credit card transactions. Generally the rates weren't too bad being about 2-3% from the mid rate so better than you would get in a airport exchange booth or at the bank but not as good as the currency exchange shops recommended here. However, for most credit and debit cards there is a transaction charge as outlined by Linda so your total extra cost can be around 5%. One way to mitigate this is by popping into Metro Bank on CHR with a couple of forms of ID and getting their debit card which they can issue on the spot. There are no foreign currency transaction charges on this. |
