"As you seem so certain that is the cause for the early morning flyovers, please cite chapter and verse on (1) whether that is indeed the case for these flyovers and (2) whether there is any alternative from waking up hard-working people in what to many is the middle of the night." 1) Yes, see post below - Heathrow have been working on the ILS over the last week and presumably (I suspect for reasons connected to insurance and the validity of their aerodrome licence and regulatory obligations under their ANO) need to ensure that it's working correctly 2) No, because the airport uses its ILS for landing planes from 0430 to 0000 every day and a slow twin piston plane doing orbits on the glidepath would get in the way, possibly terminally Personally I find the sound of a Piper Chieftain rather more soothing that the sound of tearing aluminium and exploding jet fuel, but YMMV. Heathrow's CAA licence: https://www.caa.co.uk/docs/375/20150303PublicLicencesAndMapsKToO.pdf CAA conditions on ILS, note particularly references to maintenance from page 19: http://www.caa.co.uk/docs/33/CAP%20670%2023%20May%202014.pdf 'Localiser: part orbit ± 35° at approximately 6 nautical miles for both transmitters (1265).' We're about 6nm away, I think, which explains why it seems to hover around here. |
