However in Heathrow's case, a passenger using Heathrow as the hub between, say, LAX and Stockholm will be more profitable for the airline than a passenger going between, say, LAX and Aberdeen.  So there still isn't necessarily the incentive to put on more domestic flights.

I've seen analysis on the percentages of transit passengers going through Heathrow and there are very few transit passengers on the "least popular" routes.  Transit passengers are really there to fill up and generate more flights to the most profitable destinations such as JFK, LAX and the major European cities.
