In reply to various points so far raised:

Yes, I did find the Mozart a bit unrewarding to start with, but appreciated it more in the later movements, when I realised I recognised it! Perhaps I wasn't in the right mood initially. About Don Giovanni, I agree that Act II drags a bit, partly because the libretto loses its way into dull identity-swap territory,and into a succession of  lovely arias during which nothing really happens.

And Walton's Belshazzar! I was mouthing along with the chorus and even the soloist, as I sang in this when a teacher at Ealing Grammar, and my fantastic Music colleague, John Railton, daringly mounted it with the school orchestra and choir. It was one of a series of modern works (Britten, Honegger, Orff) which we did. Professional players were engaged to bolster the brass, and they almost ruined the performance by messing up the final brass chords. One of the boys at the school at that time was Alistair Jones, recently retired as conductor of the choir at St  Michael's.
