I think the numbers are primarily done by sampling i.e. a proportion of people arriving in the UK are invited for a voluntary interview and asked the reasons for their visit. As a result the figures are likely to be very much an estimate though the direction of travel is clear.

In London the big influx seems to be either in the construction industry with Crossrail and other big projects sucking in workers from a moribund European building market. Secondly there is still a massive influx in the financial sector with large numbers of European bankers still coming in - the tube now is like the dressing room of a premier league football club in terms of languages spoken. The last figure I heard for workers from the French financial industry who have moved to London is 40,000 so if you add in dependents you will have accounted for a significant proportion of the net inflow.

The net increase in demand for construction workers over the next few years is probably about 100,000 and although they are less likely to bring dependents, once again you can account for a big proportion of net immigration.
