This is not just about foxes. It affects the hare population too. Since the ban came in a decade ago, the hare population has been target practice in a free for all for lampers as well as taking a big hit from buzzards that are protected and multiplying like crazy. Lampers do not respect the breeding season and take out anything that moves, including gravid hares and leverets. Farmers are also much more likely to shoot hares now that they cannot ask hunts to cull the old and sick. The tacit agreement that lampers would not operate in hare hunting country is no longer extant; hunts cannot legally employ hare conservation officers, although some do still monitor populations whilst trail hunting. If you support the ban you should also be prepared to support the destruction of beagles, foxhounds and harriers and watch as healthy working breeds decline into the "show" dogs with narrow gene pools and endemic hereditary diseases and the worst of breeders' dogs are palmed off as pets. |
