Something I noticed when watching the TV coverage of election results. When returning officers read out the total votes for each candidate, the given names of the candidate were announced. In Miliband's case, the name was just 'Ed'. Now is that on his birth certificate ? I doubt it. I do dislike the fad among politicians for a 'popular' first name; are they ashamed of the parental choice? 'Mo' (a.k.a.Marjorie) Mowlam always made me grimace when I heard it, and the PM's 'call me Dave', and the various Nicks, Eds and Jims belittle the status of MP. Just my view,as one who possesses a first name he dislikes but has never tried to abbreviate. |
