The pledges on the Edstone were so bland and uncontroversial, the UK equivalent of America's 'mom and apple pie', that they could have been made by any of the parties. The huge error of judgement was in thinking it was a good idea to carve them on a stone and then proudly display it to an incredulous public. Miliband's acceptance of it suggests something about the fantasy world that can overtake politicians in the fever of an election campaign.
