The £70 a week for all is not quite as daft as it sounds. Presumably they would strip away all the tax allowances so you would pay tax on the first pound you earn which would be a massive simplification - current allowances of tax alone would make up £40 per week. UKIP have something similar in mind. We have had a barmy system of NI + NI employers + PAYE reduced by a set of allowances then increased by child allowance for as long as I remember and much further back. A proper overhaul of this system is long overdue - believe or not there was a green paper suggesting some of this in 1979 when I joined the Inland Revenue but nobody has had the balls to follow up in the last 30 odd years. |
