I think Mary Macleod is right. Fracking offers the potential to reduce not increase the profits of the fossil fuel industry by bringing prices down. This helps the poor most because they spend the largest proportion of their income on energy bills. Fracking can also reduce our dependence on unstable and potentially hostile areas of the world for energy supplies such as Russia and the Middle East. It could also deliver a substantial net benefit to our balance of payments boosting our economy and therefore ultimately providing the resources for better public services. It goes without saying that the resources available should be exploited in a way that minimises any environmental harm.
