Italy were very, very poor in the second half. It's not just fitness with them but confidence too. They finished very strongly against Scotland, but then Scotland have been poor in the second half all tournament. Italy still should have not lost to Wales by that amount in Rome any more than Scotland should have lost to Ireland by that amount in Edinburgh. Scotland don't have too many excuses for how they played against Ireland, but there are some. Scotland have some strength but very little depth. We started the tournament without Maitland and then lost Richie Gray and Dunbar as the tournament went on. There are some positions where we could lose players and have replacements of a similar quality but those players were too important to Scotland to be replaced. Scotland have some extremely talented players but very little leadership and experience. That was brutally exposed by an Ireland team that boasted 275 (!!!) more caps than their Scottish counterparts. Ireland were utterly dominant in that game and the amount of leaders that they had on the pitch and their experience as a team was simply not something that the young Scotland team could handle. Unfortunately, the "experienced" old heads that we do have, such as Laidlaw, Ford, Hamilton, are actually some of our worst players and biggest liabilities. I'd argue that despite the dreadful look of the table Scotland have played some fantastic rugby and actually have a wonderful highlights reel. Unfortunately the blooper reel is twice as long and that did for us. We also have hope for the next few years with our U20s doing well in beating Wales, Ireland, Italy and putting in a decent showing against England. The Under 18s also beat Ireland last week. Hopefully by the time they come through the old guard will have been put out to pasture and the young crowd such as Johnny Gray, Hogg, Bennett, Ashe, F. Brown, Fagerson, Hidalgo-Clyne (Who will all be about 25-26 at world cup 2019) can give them a better mentoring than they got from the generation of losers before them. This world cup will come too early though and beating USA, Samoa and Japan to qualify from the group (none of which are guarantees for me) will be seen as a result. For anybody interested, below is a fantastic summary of Scotland's current woes. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/scotland/32010820 For any |
