Alison are you sure you lost the earring outside?  I'm asking because I lost an earring once and it turned up in the house, on the floor in a doorway FIVE years after I'd lost it. I have no explanation other than I had decided, in the week it was found, to have a copy made because I was very fond of them.  Don't discard the other one - you never know.......spooky things might happen in your house too!
