Mr. Barry, My comments on the future of The Hole In The Wall were not intended as political and I was not "whinging". For the record, I represent my constituents first and the opinions that I express are in no way vetted or censored by the Conservative Party. The question that you pose is plain daft. To directly answer it, I do not get "upset" by "a property owner seeking to maximise their return on capital", but, as a Councillor, I have the perfect right to oppose any individual application if I believe that it is inappropriate for the wider community. Just because a conservative is in favour of free enterprise in principle does not mean that he or she is in favour of sweeping away all planning laws, particularly with regards to change of use of an individual property. It is equally nonsense to imply that Conservative Councillors do not oppose individual planning applications. Finally, with regards to opposing party policy generally, I am fortunate that I am a member of a political party that has always allowed its members freedom of conscience. We are not Stalinists and rigid adherence to ideological doctrine is not a requirement. |
