There must be a user profile if you think about it because you can be registered on more than one site and have different user options. The complexity of the user data structure probably mitigates against using an existing solution. The closest I'm aware of is the Trip Advisor forums which have geographical sub-divisions but a less complex user profile i.e. you immediately have permission to post on all forums unlike here where you have to individually register. It would be simpler to have a single user registration with an opt in to newsletter for various areas but that would mean the individual sites in the network losing some of their distinct identity. |
