| Unfortunately your beliefs seem to be based on the logical fallacy: The existence of God can’t be proved > Therefore the alternative that there is no God is proved. Your ‘clincher’ is really no such thing. The logic of it is: Religions Have Different Views of God > All religions can’t be right > Therefore all religions must be wrong and there is no God. These are very unsound foundations for a dismissive attitude to others views. It is logical to say that most religions must be wrong because only one could be exactly right but you only prove that they are wrong in detail not that their shared belief that there is a greater meaning to life and a Creator is wrong. Nobody has proved the existence of God any more than they have proved that the universe just happened for no apparent reason. Both seem highly unlikely to me but the problem is that one of them must be correct. The strongest evidence for God that has been presented to me is when those of faith point out my awareness of self and the consequent development of conscience. I was hoping to get a sound rebuttal of this argument from Richard Dawkins but his ‘selfish gene’ idea does not really address the basic issue. How did we evolve self-awareness and what evolutionary purpose does it serve? If we are simply a very sophisticated walking biomedical computer we would probably survive even better without it. |
