Please forgive me, I am new to this site. I was looking for some information on something quite different but stumbled across this thread. It struck me that you are all debating the existence/non-existence of the classical image of God. Presumably a personal figure. This, it seems, is the way most religious folks, that take the scriptures literally, view God. This is also the God that atheists will dispute. It seems the easiest way to argue for or against. I wonder if perhaps Joseph Campbell's definition or description might be closer to the truth. Or at least would change the nature of any argument for or against. "God is a metaphor for that which transcends all levels of intellectual thought. It's as simple as that." This does not paint God as a man, a person, a creator, a father figure, but something much more subtle..something that we, with our limited capacity for thought, simply can never comprehend. Much like the idea of infinity. Science is of great importance but it's reach is, and always will be, limited. Also the human mind can only go so far. It can never get behind consciousness itself. Therefor, such arguments are rendered pointless at best. Another view we might take is that there is no 'kind of God' that would murder children, but there are the laws of cause and effect that we must all seemingly abide by. Which, in itself, returns a large degree of responsibility to us, as humans. That any event, however despicable is interdependent on an infinite number of factors of which all play a significant part. I don't invite any hostility nor am i claiming in any way to be right. However, to entertain such ideas with an openness to discover. To examine our own delusion (which means to acccept that we are, in a number of ways, deluded) . To be fully prepared to be wrong. To refrain from judging others - these are surely at the root of humility, compassion and understanding. Only when we are able to cultivate such qualities will atrocities, such as the one mentioned in the original post, cease. |
