Keith you don't need a food processor.  Just get yourself a £15-£20 electric hand whisk (not a hand blender).  It will do the job perfectly for cakes/meringues.

I invested in a Kitchen Aid mixer 15 years ago but I do a lot of baking.  Before that, the above worked just fine.
