Under the Equalities Act of 2010, Claridges broke the law. The law states that "service providers must not discriminate, harass or victimise a woman because she is breastfeeding." Service providers include restaurants and cafes. Discrimination includes refusing to provide a service, providing a lower standard of service or providing a service on different terms. As for equating a baby feeding with defecating, flashing your genitals or having sex in public - that analogy doesn't hold up. Were the mother changing her baby's nappy in public, it might; but she wasn't. The restaurant is designated as an eating area. The baby is eating. What's the problem? |
