Hi Claire - I am not a medical man but I understood that from the 1930s Thiomersal an organomercury compound was used as a preservative in vaccines to prevent bacterial and fungal contamination. However following a review of mercury-containing food and drugs in 1999, the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Academy of Pediatrics asked vaccine makers to remove thiomersal from vaccines as quickly as possible as a purely precautionary measure, and it was phased out of most North American and European vaccines. Almost all subsequent research has shown that there was no risk from thiomersal BUT it has not been reintroduced into vaccines. |
