Whilst the main part of the Great West Road was opened in the 1920s...it only came as far east as Chiswick Roundabout. Hogarth Lane, Ellesmere Road and Cedars Road existed though...the later using the westbound carriagway only....over the Underground railway and halted at the junction with Wellesley Road. That was interesting the mention of the large building in Park Road North...and also the Chiswick House Gatehouse and adjoining structures. We're getting hot there...although I knew that one of the Cubs and Scout troops met near there but I didn't know those walkways too well. However in Kelly's 1938 Chisiwck Directory there is a Sutton Court School closeby there (25 years after the picture of The Limes)...on the north west corner of Park Road/Ellesmere Road...next to house numbers 26, 28, etc on the even side. Sounds like the wrong corner to me..however! Mrs Dorothy Crewley was the principal of this School in 1938....and also in 1938 there was a sister School called SuttonCourt also at 8 Marlborough Road! Caroline Hammond at the Library possible knows the answer but we like trying to find out the hard way! |
