And you're dead (npi) right about Mortlake.  I've done a few stand-ups there in my time and you have to project really hard if you want to be heard.   Pitch it to the very back of beyond).  Trick is to look into the eyes of the audience - you can soon tell if they've fallen asleep.  A year or so ago I was at a humanist funeral where we were treated to an excellent and very witty eulogy.  The guy was using his full voice. 

Other times (I usually sit at the back) I've often struggled to hear a word....

Call in for a tortoise salad sometime....
