Jill - I'm becoming aware that individual catteries for the RSPCA appear to keep animals for a longer time and may have a no kill policy but my concern is that you don't necessarily know what's going to happen when you phone a number and ask them to come and collect a stray. I've based my opinion of them on the fact that HAWs have been phoned up and asked to collect kittens in the height of the summer by the RSPCA on the basis that "we'll have to put them to sleep in two weeks if you don't" which is both emotional blackmail and not reassuring about what will happen to animals that go in there. And the RSPCA is remarkably cagey about statistics and policy - yes, I've tried asking them. They just say the information isn't available. I would be happy to know for sure of individual RSPCA premises that never put a healthy animal to sleep because then I would happily suggest people go and hand an animal into that individual location. However, if the RSPCA come and collect a stray, how does one know which location its going to go into? Any info would be much appreciated. I believe the RSPCA is great for dealing with cruelty and neglect but has started spending so much money on large political issues I think they've lost sight of the grass roots of animal rescue. I am, though, prepared to be convinced otherwise. |
