Claire, I think what Adrian probably meant was that Steve built him a PC from components, to his own spec.  It's a good way to get exactly the spec you want, and Steve would probably give advice on an appropriate spec for your needs. I bought something similar from Amazon Marketplace a few months ago because I couldn't find anything from the name brands that didn't ship with Windows 8, which I hate.  Mine came from a company I hadn't heard of, but with good reviews on Amazon, and with name brand major components (CPU, graphics processor, hard drive etc).  It was also cheaper than the name brands.
