Sorry to dampen your bonfire Michael, but I don't think anyone is anti LED as such, and they could offer us all sorts of benefits when the technology matures a little. Human centric LED lighting has a great potential - lights that respond to human need, friendly to wildlife and saving energy etc The issue we face in LBH is that the LEDs selected here have been dumped on the market by Phillips and would be better used in Cell Block H: they pollute the sky, are not good for wildlife, may well have health implications, have a lot of glare, flicker, look awful in terms of the light itself and the design. Trafford Council have started to pull back on their deployment for all these types of reasons. In parts of the US they're already banned. http://www.suffolkcountyny.gov/Portals/30/press/2013/Schneiderman%20announces%20light%20pollution.pdf I can see an EU directive in the not too distant future that removes them from residential areas. I wonder who will pick up the bill for that. |
