Extracts from https://sites.google.com/site/keepwatermansinbrentford/the-case-for-watermans-in-brentford "Q Why not regenerate Watermans on its present site? Access to sufficient capital. Moving Watermans to a new site will enable it to attract some “planning gain” funding from the regeneration of Brentford town centre, but also unlock capital from riverside housing that can be invested into a town centre facility. The sums involved in building a new, state of the art facility will demand this blend of different funding sources – particularly in the current economic climate. Watermans is in a relatively isolated location within Brentford. As the recipient of Hounslow Council’s largest voluntary sector grant it makes sense, given the economic regeneration priority of revitalising Brentford town centre, that the presence of a new Watermans in the heart of the town is used to catalyse greater footfall and a stronger high street economy. This will be a two way street. Together a new Watermans and regenerated town centre will generate more footfall than they could achieve individually. The Turner Contemporary in Margate, for example, attracted over 330,000 visitors in its first seven months, boosting the town's economy and helping Margate's regeneration." The good burghers of Chiswick can just stay for a few extra stops on the 237 or 267. Those coming from a tube can now choose from the E2, E8 or 195 rather than just the 65 and those coming from Kew and beyond will have to change buses or walk half a mile. |
