This Government has continued the previous Labour Government's policy of encouraging and subsidising onshore and offshore wind power. The subsidies have been mainly to the foreign owners of the wind farms who have sent billions importing equipment and materials from outside the UK Very few jobs have been created for British workers as a result. Wind power is unreliable because it only produces power when there is wind. The construction of offshore wind farms is expensive. Onshore wind farms are unsightly and mar the natural appearance of the countryside.. They are not the whole solution and any proposals for new wind farms have to be carefully reviewed against economic, environment and reliability criteria. The Government needs to move ahead with immediately building a new generation of nuclear power stations and the development of shale gas deposits within a strict regulatory environment. |
