| Hello all, I am currently researching early English modern texts and decided to undertake some research on our local history in Chiswick. I have found two very interesting pieces of text on a murder committed by the 7th Earl of Pembroke, Philip Herbert at Turnham Green in 1680. The Earl had got drunk on this specific evening at the 'Cock & Half-Moon' Pub and the King's officer of watch, William Smeeth had questioned the Earl why he was walking around so late so he murdered him viciously. This Earl had a very bad temper and committed at least two murders while he was alive and was pardoned both times using his privilege of peerage to be excused from prison. I have only been able to find information on Philip Herbert using the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography and a website called EBBO. I would really like to be able to find the court papers for the murder of Mr William Smeeth at Turnham Green committed by the Earl of Pembroke but I'm not really too sure where to look. The hearing was heard by the Middlesex Grand Jury on 21st June 1681. Would anyone know where I could possibly find out more information on this murder which happened in Turnham Green and/or suggest where I could potentially find the court papers for it? I would really appreciate any knowledge or advise which could be shared. I am going to be creating a small publication on the two texts I have found by the end of January and would be very happy to share it with anyone who is interested in this topic. Many thanks, |
