The landing of the 1st V2 bomb in the UK during WW2

It happened in Staveley Road, Chiswick, not far from the Gates
to Chiswick House Grounds ... and opposite the Staveley Road Secondary Modern Schools.

The disastrous event shattered the lives of many,
with damaged/ destroyed homes all around.

Local folk were obviously distraught ... resulting in Government Ministers coming to Chiswick to inspect the shocking scene. To calm nerves they said it had been a Gas Explosion!

My father was in the local Home Guard,
and he was able to take me along to see the scene a few days later.
I don't recall the houses ...but certainly the giant crater in the middle of the Road. (A hole large enough to fit two single decker buses.

The Memorial Stone was unveiled at the site many years ago.
It remains there today as a reminder ... and commemorating the lives lost.
