| The Post Office does not own Heathfield Terrace - it belongs to a property investment firm that bought it from the Royal Mail about 15 years ago. What it has been doing is closing Crown Post Office where the staff are directly employed but this was not the case in Chiswick. Acton was a Crown Post Office before it closed. Standalone in this sense seems to mean in a distinct building where the sub-postmaster has control of access to the entire unit. This won't be the case at Robert Dyas. There is a service mandate for the Post Office which requires 90% of the population to be within one mile of a branch. Closing branches in densely populated areas puts them at risk of breaching that mandate although doesn't prevent them from doing so. Perhaps the Post Office's preference for the Robert Dyas site over the Chiswick Back Common one is it is more effective in helping them meet that mandate. If that is the case I hope they have considered that the recently opened branch on Acton High Street has been shuttered up for a couple of months. |
