| I entirely agree with you that traffic surveys are a more robust way to determine patterns of usage than my observations. When the data is available for last weekend we'll be able to say for sure if my impression of the usage being similar to weekday peaks is accurate. Until then any quibble you might have is just your opinion. I don't think also anyone is going to dispute that, in the context of the whole transport network, car use is inefficient. However, a car with no passenger can still be the most efficient means of travel for an individual for a particular journey. London certainly seems to be an outlier in terms of the number of passengers a car carries - the ratio is about 1.1 compared to 1.5 in the rest of the country. This must be partly due to dead time for Uber drivers who spend most of the time on the road waiting for a fare or on the way to a fare plus what seems to be the growing phenomenon of self-employed delivery people using their own cars. The fall of in the number of cars using CHR is probably down to the age of Waze and a response to slower speeds and more delays on the road over the last few years which means that drivers are choosing alternative routes. Unfortunately buses, the most efficient form of transport, can reroute so the council and TfL needs to follow through on earlier plans to get traffic movement speeded up particularly through the centre of Chiswick. |
