| I was never an enthusiastic remainer or brexiter. Both sides told obvious lies and quite frankly no one could have predicted Covid, Putin's Bloody War and Trump's continuing idiocy. Few choose to remember now just how fractious our relationship with the EU was for most of the time that we were members. So semi-detached were we that governments of very differtent hues refused to join the Euro - because of the damage that this would have inflicted on our economy. In 1973 the EU accounted for 50% of the world trade in goods and services by 2026 this had shrunk massively. There is a strong case for arguing that we should be "hitching our star" to India, China and other economic giants (including the USA). Yes we are Europeans, but so what, Brits have for centuries traded all the time, with everyone and everywhere. It is often said that our living standards have shrunk by 6-8% because of leaving the EU. But that is a misquotation. The model on which that is based says rather that our living standards would be 6% to 8% higher if we had stayed in the EU and NOT that we actually have contracted our economy. If we are to have the debate again then please can this time it be open, honest and fair. If the proponents cannot foretell the future then they should say so. |
