With the pretence of saving just £30 million and easing backlog, the Government, including our very own MP Andy Slaughter, voted away the right to jury trials (for low-level offences). Eliminating what the Magna Carta enshrined in 1215, with “To no one we will deny or delay right or justice”.

304 MPs voted for. 203 voted against.

ALL those who voted for it were Labour MPs. Including David ‘Mastermind’ Lammy.  As a reminder, he is previously on record saying “Jury trials are a fundamental part of our democracy. Criminal trials without juries are a bad idea”.
Certainly true when shifting justice from a group of peers to a single sitting judge holding bias. Why the change? We must have citizens over state.

Backlogs in courts are not caused by juries, which make up only 3% of criminal cases brought. They are caused by part-time courts, sitting only a few hours a day, a few day a week, with hundreds of courts closed per day (today it was 14% of total courts closed). The savings quoted by Lammy represent just 0.2% of the Ministry of Justice’s budget.

This bill and a further slide into tyranny by a Government out of control, still has to go through the House of Lords. It must be stopped!
