Brings to mind an ode I wrote for Trevor Bayliss who invented the first wind-up radio. He was the godfather of my then boyfriend. He lived on Eel Pie Island with his beloved dog. Such a lovely man, now sadly deceased.

"A wizened old wizard from Twicks
Was lounging around in his knicks
Watching the telly
And stuffing his belly
From a packet of Doggio bicks

Thus it was on this dark winter's night
His attention was drawn to the plight
Of a distant nation
That lacked communication
To its people, where money was tight

A solution he felt could be found
For a way to fabricate sound
A way to endower
A wireless with power
No batteries, no voltage, just wound!

He toiled away noon, night and day
Until finally finding a way
He cried out 'Eureka!'
I CAN help Afreeka
And his faithful hound let out a bay!

And that's how this magnificent fella
Came to shake hands with Nelson Mandela
And everyone reckons
Fame and fortune now beckons
For his radio's a number one seller!

I was there when he hung a device over a tree branch and a crackly noise emanated from it. A memorable experience. He was thrilled with my ode and hung it on his wall!

Just thought I'd share it with you.
