I've noticed as well how short the sell by/best before dates can be at Chiswick M&S to the point where I am on the look out for them. You often have to reach to items at the back of the display.

It could be that, in a funny sort of way, this indicates that the store is being successful with high turnover allowing them to put out stock close to expiry knowing that it will be gone quickly. The confirmation that the store is going to shut for several months in a few weeks seems to point to it getting exceptionally high turnover.

Personally, I found this surprising. Having been at one point M&S's biggest fan, I found myself shopping their less since Covid and being more conscious of the issues with over processing of food. They provide a relatively poor selection of raw ingredients and even with veg often feel they need to add some sort of twist which makes the product both more processed and expensive.
