Furniture became far more flammable with the use of foam padding which creates dangerous fumes and smoke.  Then it was treated with chemicals which are also a problem. There are new rules about the storage and disposal of upholstered furniture. You do need to find someone who wants a sofa.  Once it is considered 'waste' then a whole load more rules come into place concerning storage and disposal.
