Having to been a victim recently of a scam like this at a cash machine, I can say the person who asked/told you to press other buttons to return your card was in on the scam. His job was to get you to hold other buttons while entering your pin, which using your hands in this way stops you from covering (as you would normally do) your pin number, he would have an accomplice on your other side, who makes a note of your pin.
