Hi Nick - I think that my views on CPZs have been pretty consistent over time. Unfortunately for your purposes my answer cannot be a straight "Yes" or "NO" so I guess I will not be counting on your vote in May. CPZ's are not an end in themselves but rather a tool for the job. In some circumstances a CPZ is the least worst option and in others a CPZ is a thoroughly bad idea. I would hope that you and others can appreciate the need for a more nuanced view i.e. CPZ's where residents want them and there is compelling evidence that a CPZ will have an positive impact on most residents' lives. The micro-CPZs introduced at the south end of Park Road and in front of the Grove Park Road shopping Parade were introduced as a direct result of my discussions with the traffic planning officers and by my lobbying at the Chiswick Area Forum. These have by all accounts worked well and have helped safeguard much valued local retail businesses. I do not consider myself the fount of all knowledge and am quite prepared to listen to what residents with differing views have to say. The Mayne CPZ "Intervention" has predictably produced quite as many problems as it has solved. If re-elected I would be seeking for any consultation on the Park Road/Staveley Rd CPZ to extend at the very least to all neighbouring streets. I would also encourage all residents to respond to the consultation as is their right - even if they do not live in the streets covered by the CPZ. It now seems clear that the Mayne decision was deeply flawed since it DID NOT take account of the many objections from residents who did not live within the proposed CPZ. The Local Government Ombudsman is I understand to adjudicate on this matter. Perhaps others have more information on this? I shall be most interested to hear what other candidates think on this matter. For those residents who may choose to disagree with me on CPZ's I would ask that you look at my whole record as a councillor both in the Ward and on Hounslow wide matters e.g. The Hounslow Highways PFI, Audit Committee & and the Pension Investment Fund Committee. |
