From a quotation posted earlier by Claudia: "it has to be understood that girls can be good girls without FGM." It has also to be understood that in this country, girls can be 'bad' girls without FGM. It has to be understood that men do not own their women or girls and that this savage practice is absolutely forbidden under any circumstances. However, as long as the authorities concerned are so feeble in their attempts to investigate and prosecute this disgusting crime, there is unlikely to be much effort made to eradicate it in the communities which routinely practise it. I think we should adopt the policies employed in France, where I understand that there is routine and repeated examination of the young girls who are likely to be the victims of this physical violation (and yes, that presumably means focusing on girl children from specific communities, and monitoring them before and after visits to their parents' 'home' countries). The result is that there have been regular and successful prosecutions of the perpetrators of this unacceptable practice. |
